South Africa’s Youth
Right now in South Africa, six million young people are unemployed. The youth themselves have identified unemployment as the biggest problem they face.

Young people are the hardest hit members of our society by growing rates of HIV infections and by social problems such as violence and crime. Many young people do not have skills and have limited opportunities to participate in the formal job market. A lack of funding opportunities further perpetuates the high rate of unemployment and the shortage of skills.

The Creation of Ubuntu Youth Group
The vision of our newly founded democracy is to create a platform for young people to be self-reliant, and create skills base that can meet the challenges of South Africa’s rapidly changing economy. Such good visions will remain wishes or dreams if young people themselves fail to seize the moment and make a positive contribution to the overall good of the country.

Ubuntu was formed directly to respond to the burning issue of youth participation in nation building. With help from friends both locally and abroad, a handful of young Sowetans took a gigantic step to do something about their destiny. Initially the group was known as Ubuntu in Soweto (since it was formed in Soweto) but with membership increasing the group has increased its working areas. Now, the group works both in the West Rand (Soweto) and the East Rand (Thokoza), notorious for its political violence in the 1990s.

Ubuntu Youth Group (U.Y.G.) has its focus on socio-economic issues and embraces a peaceful and a harmonious living environment (communities).

Our Vision
To enhance the active participation of South African youth in the mainstream economy, politics, etc.

Our mission

  • To restore and improve the quality of life for communities and the well being of the previously economically disadvantage communities.
  • To foster a better understanding between youth stakeholders.
  • To provide services in area such as economic self-sufficiency, security, health, sports, and education enriched with cultural and spiritual enlightenment.

Our Purpose

Ubuntu symbolises the new spirit of and for young people in South Africa. It embodies a new sense of hope, self-exertion, self-reliance and enthusiasm; facilitating the development of young people into contributors and beneficiaries of a democratic society. But this will, as in the past, need assistance from both domestic partnerships and from the international community.

Our philosophy

With the ability we have, we can change our environment to be a best society.

Ubuntu facilitates the creation of opportunities for youth employment by accessing resources and forming partnerships with relevant service providers.

How Ubuntu Works
Ubuntu is a grass-roots, community-based youth group mandated by its members to seek, access, and partner with specific service providers who have the best interest of young people at heart.

Ubuntu Youth Group engages only legitimate and progressive organisations on behalf of its clients (youth and the community at large) to meet their concerns.

The group is a platform for young people to become actively involved in activities in respond to initiatives by local governments and many other initiatives created to enhance skill development and economic empowerment.

This group is a visionary, energetic team of young people and constantly keeps contact with established institutions to keep up on the latest on youth development.

Create Work Approach
Our young democracy poses both a challenge and a great deal of opportunities for fresh minds. And therefore it is essential for young people themselves to take a firm stand and create better tomorrow of their own.

This can be achieved when and only when there is access to information and relevant resources. So the create-work approach is aimed at young people initiating work for themselves via domestic and international investments in their work for the mentioned markets.

Despite series of exhaustive efforts by government and its institutions such as our national youth commission and the umsobomvu youth fund, to mention but two well known, Ubuntu has identified lack of grass-root activism as a stumbling block for why programs and initiatives aimed at youth development do not reach desired destination most times.

Computer Training
With the ever changing world of economics, it has become essential for young people to get some sort of basic computer skills during and after their schooling days. The idea with this project is to have a moderate computer lab, where young people, in fact the whole community, can come in to access information and use the Internet. We had two computers donated by an organisation in California – but one is dead and now we are left with one old one, which is not promising.

Paper Making Studio
The papermaking studio in Soweto is another proud initiative by the group in our effort in skill development. Used paper is collected and then recycled for the manufacturing of other by-products such as books, boxes, and other paper products.

This studio is run by members, but in need of proper machinery such as a pulp beater (a small beater costs about R26 000) and many other components to run a semi professional studio.

The Food Gardening Project
This initiative is run simultaneously in Thokoza and Soweto Township. Vegetables are gardens created on unused community land. This project involves everybody from the community, the young and the old.

The purpose of this project is to curb the scourge of poverty left by years of unemployment, oppression, and underdevelopment. The beneficiaries are school-goers, out of school youth and the unemployed persons involved.

Community Service
One of the cornerstones of Ubuntu Youth Group is its strong belief in being a responsible citizen. It is for this reason that all our goals are aimed at uplifting our community. But we can only achieve this by getting young people in community volunteerism, e.g., civil corps do volunteer work at old age homes, emergency service volunteer work, etc.

Individual Interests
Many members have individual interests of their own and many are qualified in one field or the other. Amongst members, we have qualified computer technicians, artists, health workers, etc.

U.Y.G. represents the aspiration, hope, and endless search of young South Africans to play a meaningful role in today's ever-changing world of nation building.
