Public Access to
Police Misconduct Records
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE ACLU
RE: Recent California Supreme Court decision restricting public access to Police
Misconduct Records.
This bad Supreme Court decision must be reversed in order for Civilian Review
Boards to be effective and that is what Senate Bill 1019 would do.
Thousands of ACLU-NC activists called on California Assembly members to stand up
for government transparency by supporting AB 1648 and SB 1019--two bills that
would overturn the Copley Press decision (that shut down access to certain
police records) and provide greater public access to police misconduct records.
We are pleased to report that SB 1019 was voted out of the Senate Public Safety
Committee yesterday! On the Assembly side, AB 1648 was held for now.
Many of you also sent faxes to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the
Oakland City Council, urging them to adopt local resolutions in favor of public
access to these police records. Last week, in an overwhelming 8-3 vote,
the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed its resolution. The Oakland City
Council has not yet voted.
Stay tuned for future updates on these efforts and how you can remain involved.
