the modern hunter/gatherer
a poem by Janice Leber

He is the modern hunter/gatherer

Constantly burrowing for the finest morsels;

Bringing home the best pickings from the urban forest;

Masterfully clipping with sharpened bones and honed shale

producing elegant tools for the cleanest kill:

coupons.

He disembowels the newspaper, scans the net,

his heroic search is endless.

Once he has set out, on the prowl

he surveys fruits carefully, weighs options thoughtfully.

Categorizing his immediate needs

he casts aside contenders, seeking elusive perfection.

Careful to preserve his precious paradise

he fills his tribal cloth bags

(no paper or plastic for this warrior)

and returns to his mate triumphant.

He never disappoints.

He is the hunter/gatherer

He finds the freshest kill in this jungle.

He brings home the finest morsels.
