The Third Party Movement:

Why I Voted Green

by Carol Miller

I voted Green this election because it seemed the perfect opportunity to vote third party. But I don't think the presidential election was or usually is the most important issue in an election. The initiatives are terribly important, as are the congressional and local races. It is shocking to me that only 49% of the country's registered voters voted (especially since only half the country is eligible to vote and only half of those eligible do register). That makes Bill's 50% of the 49% of 50 % of 50 % only 7% of the country voting FOR our president.

Now, in California where the public is significantly more political than in middle America, roughly 75% of the elegible voters are registered to vote, that up greatly due to motor voter. The record low voter turnout this election was probably due to the presidential race being won early in the evening, and it no doubt impacted the marginal voter and working people who often waits till the end of the day to vote, and that impacted the propositions negatively across the board. But record low in California is 71%, which means that 53% of our electorate voted in contrast to 25% nation wide.

Just thought you'd like to know that about your fellow Californians.
